Women's Health - The Menopause
Menopause is the time that marks the end of your menstrual cycle. It is often diagnosed after you've gone 12 months without a menstrual period. Menopause generally occurs between the ages of 40 and 55, and is a natural biological process caused by changing hormone levels.
It presents a number of physical symptoms such as disrupted sleep (insomnia), night sweats, feeling periodically hot (hot flushes), lowered libido, mood changes, all of which can have a significant impact on quality of life, leading to anxiety and other severe emotional health problems. Other symptoms include emotional vulnerability, sleep disturbances, fatigue, ‘fuzzy’ brain, joint pain, vaginal dryness and reduced sex drive. Menopause itself can be a relatively short-term condition, but the symptoms can last longer.
There are many effective treatments available, from lifestyle adjustments to hormone replacement therapy (HRT). HRT and other drugs can treat the various symptoms, but they are not always without side effects. Hot flushes are one of the most common symptoms, and these can go on for several years, so many women are keen to find a treatment for this.
Menopausal symptoms are common, and depending on their severity, can have a major impact on quality of life, health and wellbeing, as well as productivity.
A brief course of acupuncture could help to ease symptoms, as is proven by a study published in the online British Journal Of Medicine;
“Among women dealing with moderate to severe symptoms, acupuncture was associated with reductions in hot flushes, excess sweating, mood swings, sleep disturbances, and skin and hair problems”
Other clinical trials have concluded that acupuncture offers ‘a realistic’ treatment option for women who can’t, or don’t want to, use HRT. Traditional acupuncture is considered to be a very effective and therapeutic treatment in this area.
